How to Spray on Everbrite Coatings
Suitable Spray Guns
Spray Gun types suitable to spray on Everbrite Coatings
Use an HVLP or Airless Sprayer to spray on Everbrite Coatings; both allowing adjustment of spray, air and the amount of coating coming out. An optional extension wand (and a whip extension so that the flexible hose part is longer) makes the spraying faster and much easier to reach surfaces especially on roofs and from a boom lift.
The following is a guide. Changes in pressures and tip sizes may be needed for proper spray characteristics.
Watch how to spray on Everbrite Coatings to a Garage/Storage Door.
Airless Sprayer
In an airless sprayer, a piston pressurizes the material, which sprays out of an orifice smaller than that found on an HVLP nozzle. With an Airless Sprayer, clean lines must be used. If there is paint in the lines, the coating will spray it out onto the surface.
- Pressure: 800 – 1200 psi
- Hose: 1/4” ID Tip,
- Fine Finish: 010” (recommended, Double orifice – .011”)
- Filter: 200 mesh
HVLP Sprayer
In an HVLP, air is pumped from an air compressor or turbine atomizes the paint/coating.
- Fluid Nozzle: 63 B
- Air Nozzle: 69 PB
- Atomization Pressure: 40-70 psi
- Fluid Pressure: 20-25 psi.
Spray Tips
Most spray tips are identified by a three-digit code.
Use a 3:10 or 4:10 (USA) fine-finish reversible tip. The housing for the tip is also required.
- The first number in the tip shows the fan spray size when sprayed at a distance of 12 inches (30cm) from the surface. The fan size is double the number of the tip size.
e. a size 4 tip is an 8 inch fan; and a size 3 tip is a 6 inch fan. - The second number of the tip is the orifice size. The larger the orifice, the more coating comes out.
A 10 tip has a double orifice for better atomization. We normally recommend a 3:10 or a 4:10 tip.
Graco are common sprayer tips. A Graco FFR (fine finish reversible) 4:10 is a good tip to use for storage and garage doors.
Example: A 310 tip and a 410 tip both have the same orifice size. (10 thousandths of an inch)
But, the 310 tip sprays a 6-inch-wide fan, while the 410 sprays a 8-inch-wide fan. Because the same amount of paint is leaving the orifice of the spray tip but is being dispersed across a wider fan, the 410 tip will deliver a thinner coating with less mil build.
Spray Pressure
The pressure should be low enough to spray the surface without the coating bouncing off in big clouds. The spray is adjusted to wind conditions and the speed that someone sprays. There is no specific PSI recommendation. Lower pressure and having the gun close is a good combination.
Preparation
- After cleaning a surface with water it must be bone dry before coating application. Use the sprayer as an airgun to blow out water that may be trapped in crevices. This helps the cladding, sectional doors etc. to dry more quickly.
- When spraying over DECALS be aware that the very edges of decals can harbour dirt and this dirt needs to be cleaned off as the coating will draw out even the smallest of dirt traces. Cleaning with a very fine grit wet and dry sandpaper around the edges of decals is recommended.
Spraying
- Can you dilute coating for my HVLP sprayer? The coatings should never be diluted or thinned. The coatings are formulated to be ready to spray.
- Use a dedicated spray line because the solvent in our coatings (when wet) will quickly soften up any colour pigment traces left behind in paint residues lurking in the spray line. You would end up with tinted coating on the sprayed surface.
- Check the spray pattern before starting. Spray 150 to 200mm (6 to 8 inches) away from the surface.
- Test on a scrap piece or a piece of cardboard.
- Do not spray from too far away otherwise the coating will start to dry in the air before it adheres to the surface. The coating turns to powder in the air within 120cm (4 feet) of being sprayed.
- Start with low pressure and adjust upwards. Ensure that there is no cloud of coating; this indicates that the pressure to too high.
- If ‘orange peeling’ occurs and does not clear up, clean the spray tip or replace the tip.
- Spray the first coat on with a bit of an overlap with each sweep. Then after two or three hours; spray on the second coat. This enables good coverage.
- You must NOT force the coating to dry as it is over the drying time that the coating self-levels.
- Everbrite will be dry within 15 to 20 minutes and ProtectaClear within 40 to 60 minutes
- But you can force the CURING process (after the coating has dried) with airflow and warmth. This is 4 to 5 days in standard conditions for a cure.
Over Spray
Both types of Spray guns will cause overspray.
But the coating becomes a powder in the air after 4 feet. (120cm)
- Window Frames
Therefore masking and taping of windows would be necessary when spraying window frames. If overspray occurs onto the glass, it should be so clear that it is not noticeable. If it is excessive and needs to be removed, let it dry completely and remove it from the window glass with a razor. An HVLP can spray out a finer spray and can be adjusted down to a pinstripe if necessary. - Garage/Storage Doors
Mask/tape off down the sides of doors to prevent coating/overspray onto rubber fittings, and brushes/glide paths.
Clean Up
Clean out the lines with Xylene Solvent.
Keep Xylene Solvent and the coating away from rubber seals and rubber fittings. Always purge spray equipment before use with xylene solvent.
Can you leave the coating in the Hopper? Yes. Providing it is air tight.
